Tuzla, 175,000 inhabitants, is the biggest city in north-eastern Bosnia. It is one of the most ancient human settlements in Europe, where archaeologists found Europe’s oldest pile-dwellings dating back to the Neolithic period.

Tuzla has also an interesting geological past. Its citizens call it “the city on a grain of salt” for its salines, created by the salt deposits of the ancient Pannonian Sea that dried up over ten million years ago.

Tuzla is the only city in Europe that has a salt lake in the city centre, with a lido and beach facilities. Thanks to the natural resource of the Pannonian Sea, the water has been brought back to the surface with advanced technologies and has formed a big salt lake called Pannonian Lake, opened in 2003.

A second lake was inaugurated in 2008. The tourists offer includes also the Archaeological Park – Neolithic Lake dwellings, unique in the Balcan region. This are hosted many different cultures, who left their material and spiritual mark. This inter-cultural heritage turns the regions into an important tourist destination at international level
