Pancevo city is seated on a mouth (confluence) of rivers Danube and Tamis, 16 km far from Belgrade. The fact that is has always been located on a crossroads significally influenced its more than 850 long history. The potentials of the place - the land of extreme quality and a location influenced merchants, traders, agricultures form different places to come and set their lives and business. Due to that, it has always been multicultural and multiconfesional town.
Starting from the first brewery in Balkans, built in 1722. the industry developed through history, and after 70es of a last century Pancevo became one of the biggest industrial centers with biggest petrochemical industry in former Yugoslavia.
Today, Pancevo has 130.000 inhabitants in the city and neighboring 8 villages. It is an administrative seat of the South Banat County.
Unfortunately, during 1999 this industry was severely damaged in bombing causing enormous environmental pollution, which are presently one of the main concerns of local self-government. That is why local authorities try to develop potentials of Danube. Namely, apart of the existing port which is biggest in country, there are intentions to settle a marine and to establish new basis for the tourist and sport activities and economic relations.
