The Municipality of Brindisi is in Apulia, in the north-eastern part of the Salento peninsula. It has an important commercial port strategic for trade with Greece and the Middle East. It also has an airport. The economy of Brindisi is based on agriculture, the chemical industry and energy.
The latin name of the City, Brundisium, and the Greek version Brentesion, come from the ancient word Brention, which means deer head and refers to the shape of the harbour.
Lately Brindisi has devoted increasing attention to environmental issues and urban green areas. The Municipal Authorities has carried out many projects for the requalification of the areas in decay. Two Parks are currently under construction in the city centre Palmarini-Patri and Cillarese.
With reference to landscape protection, a National Act has been passed that sets up a Natural marine Reserve in the area called “Torre Guaceto”, whereas regional regulations have set up three protected areas: the Saltpans of Punta della Contessa, and the woodland areas Bosca di S.Teresa e dei Lucci and Bosco di Cerano.
